The Great White Shark Story! Economic Value
74
There are almost 350 kinds of sharks of which only 30 are considered dangerous to humans, and on top of this 30, only 4 kinds are the most lethal among all. Moreover, on top of this terrorist group there comes our friend The Great White Shark.
Its Latin name is: Carcharodon carcharias . The reason of its name is the white color on the abdominal area, but the color of its back is grey slightly grading to azure.
The white shark is located in warm and cold water alike, near the shore and in a depth of 700 meters and more.
Its average length is between 2 to 3 meters, and it might grow bigger to reach 6 meters. Its weight is almost 3 tons and can live up to 30 years!
This shark has an iron jaw and two rows of sharp teeth which change periodically. Its tooth, size of 7 CM, as below in the picture, is triangular with small, protruded tips to easily slice the prey.

The shark is boneless and instead of a skeleton, we can find only cartilages. It continues swimming to let water enter the gills where oxygen is extracted. Besides, it has big kidney that contains oil to help the body float. The skin combines both strength and elasticity, with a rapid gift of healing wounds quickly.
It feeds on fish, smaller sharks, big preys like sea lion, whale babies, dolphins, sea turtles, as well as floating corpses, ports and ships debris or garbage.
When attacking its prey, in a high speed of 40 Kilometers per hour, the white shark deliberately devours a large part of the prey’s lower part, leaving it bleeding and losing strength to become vulnerable.
The White Shark Economic Value:
All sharks have great economic values specially our buddy the white shark which are:
-A rich resource of multivitamins specifically vitamin A. Research confirmed that small liver oil portion helps those who have hypertension.
-The teeth are considered very expensive, sometimes; one tooth is worth up to $10000. This tooth is used as a necklace, and in some parts of Africa, they use it to make a spear or an arrow.
-Its skin is used to make shoes, purses and leather wallets because the shark skin is 11 times stronger than cow skin.
-Its flesh has become very appealing where they use it to prepare popular and expensive soup.
- Since 1950, sharks have been studied by scientists where the focus was on the immune system. It’s amazing to know that sharks are the only creatures that are immune against cancer, which might lead scientists someday to figure out a cure for this tumor.
- Sharks help preserve and clean nature thru feeding on sick or infected fishes in addition to their role as scavengers by consuming garbage from vessels, ships and ports.
Due to the increasing attempts of hunting them in the last decade, sharks became endangered species and are protected by many governments like South Africa, Namibia, Australia, Malta, California and Florida.

The great white shark is Carcharodon carcharias NOT C.megalodon (they've been extinct for more than 1 million years).
Their life span is over 30 years, not 14.
Its body is made from cartilage, not cartridges.
Its been found at depths much greater than 700M.

They’re both immigrants from Lithuania. They often carry garden gnomes and visit the statue of liberty.
It’s their favorite place to paint the people. You know, the people on the streets wearing those peculiar wigs. They are strange children and put peanuts in their soup and buttons in their jam. I would much like to meet them one day, but it’s only safe when the fish right their parasols. It is dreadfully hot when they’re crooked.
The fish haven’t righted their parasols yet, is that why you are so ill at ease? They quite gave me a headache with all the crookedness. Have you been absent for the button party in France? Alas, you are too late. They have already moved to the pacific. Oh, that will never do. It was required among us to attend. We must follow the pigs’ example and never pull the threads from our blankets. How can we follow the example if we never attend the parties?I feel lost. I feel as lost as the ducks under the rug in the parlor. They were very polite in their time and always asked me to come over. But then they made me brush their coats. How rude of them! I am no grocer! Why didn’t they ask the grocer? I told them that it was rude. Their mothers said that that was good. They said, ‘It’s about time that somebody taught them how to properly tie their laces. They ducks have made me sway my head to and fro and stare at the paintings with great confusion. For the clock has stopped and so has the pudding in the oven. It’s sad because it was so intent on winning the race today. But alas, it was out of breath because the yeast forgot to rise last Tuesday because it was too busy setting an appointment with its hairdresser. How irresponsible. The teddy bears are very ill. It’s the sea that makes them sick. They were chased away to the pacific, and felt very lonely. But the squids in the trees gave them oatmeal, which was a great comfort. They are happy and strong enough to attend the circus in Sydney
Loved the hub - am actually terrified of sharks (along with snakes) but yet at the same time they intrigue me so much that I watch any documentary I can about them!
Since sharks are apex predators, they accumulate all the toxins from the fish they eat. Since we have been dumping pollutants into the oceans for decades and decades there are extremely high concentrations of mercury in shark fins. Fins tested in Bangkok had 42 times the allowable limit of mercury in them. You are more likely to die from eating shark fin soup than you are of being bitten by a shark.
Great info man, wonderful stuff. I love marine animals and also sharks. I feel for the poor seal :-(
Great Hub here shamel, but the economic value of sharks is disturbing... for sharks plays a vital role in our environment... A comprehensive hub no doubt but Ill be glad if you find tie to read my hub about shark as well...
Great info and photos!
thanks for great story about shark, I never see like this before. great picture also.
Hi shamelabboush,
You did a great job with this hub filled with much information that I did not know. The photos are really good ones. Those teeth pictures...no wonder they can rip their prey to shreds!
All animals have the right to live in their natural environments.
Think that I'll stay out of the ocean now except for ankle deep wading along the shore! LOL
nice shark.ok,they're not that nice.but they do have the right to live.i hope i can see one for real someday.
what a shark.well, they are scary, but that doesn't mean they have to hunt them and kill them.poor animals.how can they do that.
and that sea lion in that picture is really unfortunate....
i hope i can see a shark too...
thanks.......
Very interesting hub.
shark are scary
Very impressive hub with lots of information, but the photograph of the white shark devouring its prey was scary :)
They may seem scary,,but they do have a right to live.
Very impressed by divers who can swim with a shark and touch it.
Thanks for the cool info.
Great hub and Great pictures especially the 10th one.
Hopefully, with great hubs like this we can finally do something about there safety from us. Thanks.
Very interesting hub.
You said the shark is boneless, so does that mean it doesn't have a ribcage?
I recommend you for writing something so different, and about such a majestic creature and the Great White. The hunting to almost extinction of any animal is a disgrace. They were here long before us, and have as much right to live as us.
The fact that they occasionally attack humans should have nothing to do with their right to live. The attack humans not because they are humans, only through mistaken identity. And sharks usually do not eat humans they have attacked. It seems they don't like the taske of us.
scary! an eye-opener though :-)
Interesting...
